MISSION
& VISION:
Lawyers Connecting™ is an idea engine for
professional growth.
Lawyers Connecting™ is a
resource for lawyers in private practice focusing on
professional growth through the on-going sharing of best
professional and business practices. Collaboratively, we
enhance our professional lives.
Lawyers Connecting™
is about lawyers connecting to ideas – the data, the
advice, the learning, the best practices, and wisdom –
of what they don’t teach us in law school in order to
have a truly successful practice. We do this through
connecting with each other. As our founder explains: “I
formed the group in 2006 in order to have a place for meeting
lawyers for networking and business referrals. Realizing that
we needed something to congregate around, I quickly and
naturally organized around articulating and sharing practical
wisdom. It was just the right thing to do – and it was
the core of why I ran the group."
This on-going monthly consideration of practical ideas
remains our core, and is the direct link to our success.
We define both the terms “practical” and “success”
broadly – because the results are more powerful and
meaningful that way. We’ve learned that “practical”
includes listening skills and counseling skills and many
so-called soft skills, as well as ideas for networking,
marketing and business planning. We’ve also
learned that “success” includes work-life balance,
emotional and spiritual satisfaction, and the holistic
empowerment of both clients and colleagues as well as our
communities.
We collect and share outside of the
meeting as well – in our blog posts, our newspaper
articles, and our talks. These ideas are door-openers to
connecting with others, including clients and other
collaborators.
An important part of the professional
identity of each member of our leadership team is as a
connector of ideas – and this is the identity of many of
the attorneys the group has attracted: those who are willing
to think about a solution, who want to be known as thoughtful
and for being involved with the solution. To this role as
connectors of ideas, our leaders also bring a passion for
being connectors of people.
Besides tracking who we
want to be, this approach tracks who we are. As
thinkers, we appreciate ideas, especially practical ones which
solve difficult problems. Consistent with the lawyer
personality traits of being loners and individualists, we
leave it up to each member as to how, if at all, each chooses
to pursue or apply an idea – whether to meet with or
hire the presenter, or discuss with other attorneys, or take
counsel only with herself and her firm.
A key part of this group is that it’s not just a one-
time sharing. That’s what we prefer as do those
members who have gotten the most out of it. It’s
ongoing. It’s once a month. It’s regularly
scheduled. It’s a commitment to ourselves and to
each other. The connections between members and ideas happen
more deeply and significantly given the structure of repeated
sessions over time.
That we focus primarily on idea
generation and sharing is another reason why we are not an
exclusive category group. We find that we can learn quite a
bit from those who do what we do. And when properly supported,
it can actually encourage collaboration on a number of levels.

In fact, there’s a lot more that flows out of this
format over time in addition to great ideas.
- There’s collegiality
and friendship;
- here’s business that
flows, because we can truly see how the other thinks and
acts. In addition, share ideas is a first step, which leads
to cooperation and collaboration business and otherwise;
- here’s also personal growth, because the ideas
germinate and flower.
This is the mission and vision of Lawyers Connecting™.
